ESO High Isle: How to Unlock Isobel and Ember Companions in Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online: High Isle expansion is now available for PC players, giving them their first chance to explore the Mediterranean-inspired region of the Britons. There are lush landscapes dotted across the water, dozens of new locations and a few different islands to explore. As with any new ESO expansion, there’s a lot to do right off the bat, including finding all available Skyshards and completing the various quests found throughout the region. This is all easier with a friend or members of your guild, but not all players will travel with friends. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to avoid going to High Isle alone, which is to unlock the two new companions, Isobel and Ember.

Companions were introduced with the ESO Blackwood expansion in 2021. They are basically the same as in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, albeit a little less talkative (looking at you Lydia). In High Isle, there are two companions available for players to unlock. By doing so, players can travel with this companion, which can be extremely useful during combat. The two companions in High Isle are Isobel and Ember and they are unlocked in two different areas of the region. Each has a distinct personality and voice lines, so it might be best to experiment with each one to see which one you enjoy traveling with the most.

Below you can see exactly how to unlock each one. However, keep in mind that you can only have one active companion at a time, so you’ll have to choose between Isobel and Ember at some point.

The first is Isobel as it is closer to the starting area of High Isle. As with any companion in ESO, you need to start a quest to have the opportunity to add Ember as a traveling member to your party. Ember’s quest is located near Gonfalon Bay, which is essentially the first place you find yourself in the High Isle. From Gonfalon Bay, head northeast to the middle bridge that crosses the river. Cross the huge bridge to find an NPC named Ladlow Merchant on the other side. Talk to Ladlow to start the “Tower Full of Trouble” quest.

Keep track of this quest in your journal and after going to one or two map markers, you’ll find Ember, a Khajiit with a witty personality. Talk to Ember and they will tell you about a certain tragedy that occurred on Tor Draioch. Once you’ve helped Ember through this mission, which shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to an hour, you can add them as companions.

Once you unlock Ember, you can travel back to Gonfalon Bay and head straight west. Cross the river bridge on the west side of the island and keep walking until you reach the brown wreckage that is seen on the High Isle map. Here, there will be the Castle Navire Wayshrine, which you can discover. In the shrine, there is an NPC named Lord Remard DeFulley. Talk to them to find out about the problems happening in Castle Navire. This interaction starts the quest “Tournament of the Heart”.

When tracking this quest and following the first map marker, you will find Isobel outside Castle Navire. Talk to her and she’ll offer more details about what’s going on inside the castle. She will also join you as you complete the quest, which will likely take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. At the end of the quest, Isobel is unlocked as a companion. As mentioned earlier, you can only have one active companion at a time, so you’ll need to choose between Ember and Isobel.

If you want to use one of them for a while and then summon the other, you can easily do so via the Collections menu. Go to this menu on the Inventory screen and click on the Allies tab and then on Companions. Here, you’ll be able to select any companions you’ve previously unlocked to accompany you on your travels. The companion you were traveling with before will be sent back to the menu, allowing the new one to join.

Traveling with a companion makes the journey across High Isle in Elder Scrolls Online much more enjoyable, so don’t be afraid to use Isobel or Ember.
