Video editing is coming Google Photos coming soon, allowing users to live out their movie-making dreams – however, there may be some limitations.
Users will soon be able to create and edit movies with just a few taps, as revealed in a long Google blog post (opens in new tab) describing the new movie making features – and a host of other recently released apps and tools.
But there is a problem. right now, the video editing software is planned to be “available first in Chromebook”. And there’s no hint as to when – or even if – the feature will roll out to all Google Photos users.
How does Google Photos video editing work?
The new offering appears to offer two options: automatic video creation or building your own project from scratch. The former lets users choose a theme and subjects, allowing the app to create a montage of videos and photos, including what Google calls “the most meaningful moments” from longer clips. Users who prefer to start with a blank canvas will have the freedom to simply search the photo cloud storage app and then add and reorder your own media.
Whichever route users take, they can further trim clips, add titles, music and narration, adjust brightness and contrast, or apply newly released Real Tone skin filters.
If the ChromeOS version is anything like the Google Photos mobile video editing app released last year, expect to see a movie editor more in line with the simple, at the consumer level. Microsoft Video Editor when the feature is released.
“For professional-grade video editing, the LumaFusion app is also coming to Chromebooks. LumaFusion’s multitrack video editor lets you add graphics, visual effectstransitions and distortions, audio tracks and sound effectsnarration, color grading and more,” Google said.
When TechRadar sat down with the co-founders of LumaFusionTerry Morgan and Chris Demiris to discuss what is – in our opinion – the best video editing app on iPadthey revealed to us:
“Developing for Android is definitely a challenge, which requires a completely separate development team. It’s basically rebuilding LumaFusion from scratch, but on a completely different operating system with different strengths and limitations.”
Video editing isn’t the only planned upgrade. O photo storage and sharing website also revealed new features for pre-installed Chromebook apps.
For creatives and content creators, the main one is the next PDF Editor tool for the Gallery app and opening the newly released free screen recorder Screencast application.
